I did a few experimental things with this picture, like layering marker atop of colored pencil. A lot of the shadows in the background are greyscale markers, as is the shadow underneath of them. When I started coloring I thought “hmm, how am I going to color this background?” The whole thing is shades of brown, since it’s wood, but I didn’t want to use marker for the whole thing, because, gods, that’s a lot of space to color in. I had some art stix that I had just purchased, so I started with a brown one of those, blending it with taltine on a q-tip. Well, the result was less than stellar. I didn’t get very good coverage and I was going “shit, I ruined this and I’m going to have to start over!” Then I remembered that I had a whole box of watercolor pencils AND a waterbrush. Hooray! So I filled the whole sheet with brown watercolor pencil, filled up my waterbrush and started painting. It worked great. Then I started panicking again. The brush pen I had used to ink wasn’t waterproof and parts of the drawing had smeared. >_> Not to worry, I told myself. It won’t be noticeable when I’m done. And it’s not. So after the watercolor, I worked on the ship’s wall and floor, the crates, barrel, sack of grain, and …a rat. Don’t ask. I have a fetish for sticking little inconspicuous animals in my drawings where they may or may not belong. I layered up grey markers, and various shades of brown colored pencils, blending them with a blender stump. When I finished the background, I moved on to the girls, filling in their base colors with copics, then layering up the colored pencil and blending it until FINALLY after hours, I had completed it. Obviously the real piece looks better than the scan, which came out ever so slighly blurry, and ever so slightly red tinted. I raised the contrast a bit and ran it through an unsharp filter, and the result is presentable but nowhere near as nice looking as the original.
